The Best Small Business Marketing Strategy
by John Jantsch
Small business owners often ask me to identify the best marketing strategy around. My answer to this question usually causes one of two reactions. For some, my answer is frustrating and causes them to swear and spit and do further unmentionable things. For others, it is like someone finally revealed the truth, turned on the light, and gave them permission to understand why their life is so messed up.
Bet you want to know the answer, don’t you?
The best marketing strategy for your small business is the one you can pull off – magnificently, affordably, and most importantly – completely.
Now before you dismiss this advice, hear me out.
Small business owners are great at adopting the “marketing idea of the week” program. What they are not so great at is finishing.
If you could pick out a marketing strategy, such as, speaking to chambers of commerce, submitting articles and press releases to trade publications, creating and promoting a seminar, mailing educational information to your prospects10 times a year, setting-up a referral network, and then stick with it until you implemented it to perfection…that would be the best small business marketing strategy on the planet.
I’m a big fan of multiple marketing strategies to generate and convert leads, but I would never suggest you move on to a new strategy until you really implement one effective one. I contend that if you could master just one form of marketing you wouldn’t really need to do anything else.
The problem stems from the fact that you just get bored with whatever marketing approach you are currently practicing, even if it is working, so you look for the next answer.
Here is what I want you to do starting today.
I want you to take a giant sized piece of paper and write…Today I am going to implement XXXX (substitute XXXX with your brilliant marketing strategy) Then for the next 30 days, I want you to commit to spending, no scheduling, at least one hour to work on the various aspects of making that marketing strategy come fully to life in your business. Then move on and do it again.
Do you realize the enormous power this one bit of advice has to transform your business? Don’t stop there. This “marketing advice” may actually have the power to transform your entire life. What if you actually put down the phone, turned off the computer, and spent 15 minutes a day looking deeply into your spouse’s eyes…but I digress?
We try to accomplish too much in our lives and wind up doing a whole bunch of things simply well enough to get a by. We want it all and we want it all today. This applies to our approach to marketing as well. We want the new website, and the direct mail campaign, and the interview in the big industry publication, and we want them all this month.
Choose one thing, one thing that will impact your business, and do it until it is done. Do it until you master it, do it until you become known for it. Stop looking for the “best” marketing strategy and start creating the best marketing strategy by applying your full undivided intention and attention.
Have you ever made the decision to buy a car of certain color and make thinking it was pretty unique…only to discover once you bought it that everyone seems to be driving one? This same principle can be applied to your marketing. That which you focus on will come to pass. It is one of the most widely accepted laws of nature.
If your are bound and determined to roll out many marketing strategies then, at the very least, break them up and focus a great deal of energy on them individually. Make a 12-month calendar and schedule one strategy per month. But most of all - get started today.
